Trace one signal to its source
Stitch In Time, Signals and Risk: Message Lines and the Signals and Risk Scan
Purpose. Measure how accurately information reaches the board from the people doing the work, using one real number from the organisation’s own board pack.
The key point. A board can only govern from the information that reaches it, and that information may differ from what was first reported.
- Choose one number the board relies on: arrears, programme delivery, customer complaints, stock losses or safety incidents.
- Trace it back to the work that produces it. Write down each person it passes through, along a long strip of paper on the wall.
- At each person, ask what could be softened, delayed or reframed there, and whether that person has ever been thanked for bad news.
- Rate the route green, amber or red, as I do in Stitch In Time.
- Design one Message Lines repair.
Adapted for your sector. Non-profits trace a programme result from the field to the donor report. SMEs trace a customer complaint or a stock figure. Mid-sized entities trace an item on the risk register.
